PTE Test Day Tips: What should I do on the day of the exam?

After studying hard for weeks or even months, the big day is finally here: PTE Test Day. Even though you've done lots of preparation, you might still feel nervous. It's normal to have butterflies in your stomach, sweaty palms, and a dry mouth. Test day can be scary, but there are things you can do to calm your nerves and feel ready before going into the exam room.

Before your Test

  • Before your test, make sure to arrive at the test center at least 30 minutes early to complete the necessary sign-in procedures. Being late means you won't be able to take the test. Be prepared and plan your journey to the test center.
  • It's important to bring your passport or Permanent Resident card for ID verification. The Test Administrator will check your ID using palm scanning and take a photo of you. Make sure the name in your ID exactly matches the name used when you booked the test. If your ID details don't match your test booking information, you won't be allowed to take the test.
  • Don't worry if you're unsure about the test center rules; the Test Administrator will explain everything before you start. You can also visit the Pearson website for detailed information about each test's process. Make sure to store all personal items before starting the test as you won't have access to them until after the test is finished.
  • Before entering the test room you will need to store all your personal items including : tissues and paper, drink and food, watches and outerwear, large items of jewelry.
  • As you enter the room you will receive a pen and notebook. The Test administrator will show you your seat and will start each person’s test. At this time your test begins.
  • The computer screen will guide you through an equipment check to ensure you headphones and microphones are working correctly.

During your Test

During your PTE Core exam, which lasts two hours, it's important to follow the Administrator's instructions carefully. You'll be seated in a small test booth equipped with a desktop set, a headset, and a pencil with a notepad. The Administrator will explain how to use these tools before the test begins.

The test center may have about 10 people per session, so you'll be seated close to others. You might hear their voices during the speaking session, but don't worry; the PTE headset is designed to block out background noise.

If you're not used to a QWERTY keyboard, it's a good idea to practice with one before the test. Remember, cheating is not allowed in the PTE Core test or any other exams. There are measures in place to prevent cheating, so it's important to follow the rules and do your best.

After the Test

After finishing your test, you are allowed to leave the test center. Remember that you'll receive your PTE Core test results within five business days. To check your scores online, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the official Pearson PTE website.

Here are some tips to remember on your PTE test day:

  1. Get a good night's sleep: Take a break from studying the night before and try to relax. Being well-rested can help you feel more alert and focused on test day.
  2. A little nervousness is okay: It's normal to feel a bit nervous, but try to stay clear-headed and well-prepared. Avoid being too relaxed or overly panicked.
  3. Focus on your strengths: Don't worry about the parts you didn't understand perfectly. Focus on what you do know and use common words and phrases in your writing.
  4. Understand the PTE format: The PTE is different from other exams like the IELTS, so make sure you know what to expect in terms of format and grading criteria.
  5. Check your microphone: Make sure your microphone is working properly before starting the test. If you have any doubts, let the invigilator know right away.
  6. Keep track of time: Pay attention to the time limits for each section of the test and manage your time wisely. Don't spend too long on one question and run out of time for others.
  7. Take advantage of the computer format: Writing on a computer can be easier than writing by hand, so use this to your advantage. Start with the second paragraph of your essay or summarize the text in your own words.
  8. Be mindful of others: Remember that you'll be taking the test in a room with other candidates, so be respectful of their space and avoid making loud noises that could disrupt their recordings.
  9. Don’t shout when recording your audio: You will probably take your test in a room with other candidates. This is why it’s important not to shout when doing the Speaking part of the exam. Don’t worry, your microphone won’t pick up what the other candidates are saying, but shouting might impair their concentration.

By following these tips and staying calm, you can feel more confident and prepared on your PTE test day.
